How do I know what size ice machine I need?

Start by estimating daily ice usage (in pounds). As a rule of thumb: restaurants often need 1.5–2 lbs per customer; medical offices typically need less. Koolaire cube machines range from 250–1,350 lbs/day; undercounter models fit small spaces with 100–250 lbs/day needs.
Still unsure? We’ll size it for you based on your industry, traffic, and staff.

What ice shape is best for my business?

  • Full cube: Long-lasting, slow-melting; ideal for bars, hotels, and table service.

  • Half cube: Packs tighter in cups; popular for quick-serve and restaurants.

  • Nugget (chewable): Soft, sippable; loved by healthcare and self-serve beverage stations.

  • Flake: Perfect for food displays, seafood, and medical use.
Koolaire focuses on cube production. For nugget or flake, we also supply Manitowoc, Scotsman, and Hoshizaki.

What’s the difference between a modular and self-contained ice machine?

  • Modular head: Makes ice only; sits on a separate bin or dispenser. Best for higher volumes.

  • Self-contained (undercounter): Ice maker + built-in bin in one unit. Best for tight spaces/light use.

How much space and clearance do I need?

Modular heads are typically 22″–48″ wide and need vertical clearance for airflow and service. Undercounter units fit standard 34″ counter-height openings and are available in ADA-compliant designs.
We’ll verify space, power, water, drain, and ventilation before you buy.

Air-cooled or water-cooled—which should I choose?

  • Air-cooled: More energy-efficient, simpler install—great for most sites.

  • Water-cooled: Quieter and steadier in hot kitchens; may increase water use and sometimes needs permits.
Most customers choose air-cooled unless the environment demands otherwise.

Do I need a bin, and how do I choose one?

If you’re buying a modular unit, you’ll need a separate bin sized to your production and peak demand. Koolaire bins handle 250–1,000+ lbs and are compatible with Koolaire heads and many other brands.
We’ll match the machine to the right bin—no guesswork.

Can I replace just the ice maker on my existing dispenser or soda fountain?

Yes. If you have a beverage dispenser (C-store/fast-food) or a hotel-style guest ice unit, you can replace only the ice head. We supply and install modular Koolaire/Manitowoc heads on most major dispenser brands and ensure:

  • Proper width/depth compatibility

  • Secure, correct installation

  • Manufacturer-approved bin top kits where needed

Do you offer installation, service, and parts? Do you work on all brands?

Yes. Roxboro Refrigeration provides delivery, installation, maintenance, and repairs across North Carolina and southern Virginia. We stock parts and offer fast on-site support—and we service all major brands, not just the ones we sell.

How often should my ice machine be cleaned or serviced?

Plan a professional cleaning/descale every 6–12 months. Heavy usage or hard water may require more frequent service.
Clean machines last longer, make more ice, and stay health-code compliant.

Do you offer emergency repairs?

We strive to respond quickly—especially for businesses that rely on daily ice production. Call us and we’ll triage your issue right away.

Can you service older or discontinued models?

Yes—especially Koolaire and Manitowoc units. If a unit isn’t economical to fix, we’ll give straight-forward replacement options.
